THE LEGSON KAYIRA PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Legson Kayira Primary School provides full-time education for nearly 650 students in grades 1-6. The school was built with the help of 40 international volunteers, local labor, and was designed using up-cycled shipping containers by leading South African architects specializing in sustainable development. The school, which is solar-powered and rainwater collecting, boasts a movie theater, six classrooms, two teacher's offices, and a design which takes advantage of cool breezes and natural light.
The school doubles as a center for adult learning, with literacy classes offered daily. Named after a Malawian national hero who walked 2600 miles across Africa in search of a better education, the school has attracted the attention of the United Nations and the Malawian Government as a model for a functional, efficient, and durable learning environment for vulnerable rural children.
